I support universal access to health care, the establishment of local health centers in partnership with county governments, and allowing Medicare to negotiate for lower pharmaceutical costs. I DO NOT support Medicare For All and the end of private health insurance.
We must build on our successes and learn from our mistakes in order to ensure universal, affordable healthcare for all.
To do so, we need to defend and strengthen the Affordable Care Act by implementing a strong public option.
This market-based approach to increasing affordable health coverage will introduce more competition into the market and offer an alternative to private health insurance for those who want it. Millions of Americans presently have private health insurance and must be able to maintain such insurance under any national health insurance program. For example, Labor Unions have worked hard to secure healthcare packages for members. I will not support any public option that threatens this unique advantage of being a union member or undermines the private health insurance secured by millions of Americans.
I will support federal legislation to allow Medicare to negotiate directly with drug companies in order to reduce the cost of prescription drugs. Prescription Drug costs are making it increasingly difficult for seniors to enjoy retirement. Allowing Medicare to negotiate with drug companies will reduce the cost of prescription drugs and help to lift this cost burden off of seniors.
