For Immediate Release

August 12, 2022

Great Neck, NY – Jon Kaiman, Democratic Candidate for the 3rd Congressional District of New York, urged the establishment of Federal Investigation Disclosure Guidelines in the wake of GOP calls to defund the FBI and Justice Department, and recent violent events.

Standing outside the United States District Court for the New York Eastern District in Central Islip, Kaiman said:

“Words matter. Yesterday, a gunman involved in the January 6th Capitol Insurrection engaged in a 6-hour standoff at the Cincinnati FBI Headquarters – no doubt emboldened by the continued denigration of our law enforcement officials by some elected officials.

When public officials disparage and call for the defunding of crucial law enforcement agencies, we must act. When personal information is released by political opponents to intimidate those involved in investigations and impede justice, we must act.

Therefore, I am calling on Members of Congress to establish and follow formal guidelines and protocols to ensure that impartial, thorough investigations are conducted, proper evidence is collected, and individual’s privacy is respected, whether judge, informant, or suspect. This is the gold standard for all investigations, particularly those involving law enforcement agencies.
I urge both parties to swiftly issue joint guidelines and protocols for ongoing investigations. Congress has a duty to ensure Federal investigations are not impeded by its members.

As a former Nassau District Court Judge, I know the importance of independent, thorough investigation free from intimidation. When elected to Congress, I will ensure we meet this imperative.”
